High ticket retail goods boost retail market

High ticket consumer goods have been the saviour of those in retail sales jobs throughout the credit crunch, figures suggest.

According to GFK, laptop sales were up by 43 per cent compared to the last week of April and flat panel TV sales rose by 34 per cent compared to the first week of May.

Total laptop, PC and flat top TV sales were all higher than in 2007, with total sales in the consumer electronics sector up by 12.5 per cent to £9.5 billion.

Commercial director at GFK, James Randall, claims that the increased demand for these high ticket items is driving continued technology market growth for those in sales jobs.

He told Consumer Strategy: "GfK’s research shows the value of this pent up demand is £4.8bn for TV alone.

"Few people decide to spend £600 on a TV on the day they purchase the set and there are 7.7m households who are excited by technology who have not yet purchased an HD ready flat panel TV."

Meanwhile a survey by the Confederation of British Industry has found that despite a slowing economy prices are rising at the fastest pace in 16 years, which is good news for those in retail sales jobs.
