New iPhone set for office equipment sales success

Those in office equipment sales jobs could soon see a change in the tide for Blackberry PDAs following the launch of the new Apple iPhone 3G yesterday.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs made the announcement of the new iPhone at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The new device shares many of the functions of Research in Motion's (RIM) Blackberry, which has dominated the market up to this point.

Email, company contacts and word processor and spreadsheet applications could all boost sales beyond the first iPhone's 5.4 million unit sales result.

Moreover, it even offers a global positioning system (GPS) for business people on the move - a function that the Blackberry has yet to introduce.

Gloria Barczak, chair of the marketing department at Northeastern University's business school, told Information Week that the iPhone is well positioned to become a popular piece of office equipment.

She told the magazine: "Apple's announcement of the iPhone 2.0 with 3G technology and GPS are certainly the right moves to gain market share in the enterprise market."

However, RIM is set to launch its own new 3G version of the Blackberry device before the end of 2008.
