Retail sales see growth in May

Retail sales grew year-on-year in May, dispelling concerns over inflation hitting outlets.

The new upward turn will come as relief for candidates in the retail sales recruitment sector following declines in sales reaching a two year low, year-on year, in March and April.

Commenting on the figures, Steven Robertson, director general of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), warned that consumer confidence still remains low.

He said: "After several mostly miserable months, warm sunny weather finally arrived in early May and helped lift customers' gloom.

"But we are not out of the woods yet. The economic fundamentals remain weak. BRC/Nielsen consumer confidence figures show the economy is the major concern for a third of people."

However, the picture for those in retail sales jobs in the capital, which saw year-on-year growth of 8.2 per cent, was rosier than elsewhere in the country, where sales grew by an average of just 1.9 per cent.
