Could another language help FMCG sales job applicants?

People looking for sales jobs in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry may find success is easier with another language, it has been suggested.

Angela Baron, an advisor with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said that language skills are useful for people looking to work in a global organisation, despite the growing use of English "the language of business".

Some companies will prioritise bilingual applicants for FMCG sales jobs and other positions while others will be looking for other qualities, Ms Baron explained.

"If the business that you want to go and work for mostly does business in Europe, then you might think about learning French or Spanish and if they mostly do business In Asia then you might think about learning an Asian language," she said.

Statistics from the European commission from 2005 found that 50 per cent of the continent's population claimed to be able to speak a foreign language.
