Sales job candidates reminded of age rights

Candidates for sales jobs and other positions have been reminded of their rights regarding age discrimination.

Employment relations service Acas has just released its annual report, which shows that 2,652 cases claiming age discrimination were referred in 2007-08, with 120 reaching employment tribunal hearings, reports Online Recruitment.

Chris Ball, chief executive of The Age and Employment Network (TAEN), commented that the figures suggest that too few workers are taking advantage of their right to be treated fairly, whatever their age.

Workers in sales jobs and other roles could be ill-informed about their rights and how these should be enforced, Mr Ball suggested.

"It also could be because in recruitment processes and workplace settings, ageist attitudes and their acceptance are hard to shift," the TAEN executive told the publication.

Acas asserts that it strives to improve working life and organisations through the development of better employment relations.

The service provides advice, training and information for employers and employees.
