Graduate recruitment 'hit by economic slowdown'

In news that may impact on people looking for graduate sales jobs, experts have issued a warning over the market outlook for the recruitment of university leavers.

According to figures cited by the Telegraph, legal and property firms have already reduced their graduate intake by up to four-fifths

Meanwhile, Gordon Chesterman, head of the University of Cambridge careers service, suggested that the hiring of university leavers at financial services firms is also likely to be down.

He said: "None of the big banks will dare say they are not recruiting for 2009, but I suspect numbers will be heavily cut."

Recently, graduates looking for sales jobs and other career opportunities were advised by Anne Fairweather, head of public policy with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, to build up a range of non-academic experience, such as charity work, in order to maximise their chances of being selected by firms.
