Management roles 'can be achieved in 12 months at Tesco'

Tesco's young staff could find business development manager positions or other executive roles open to them within 12 months of joining the company, a new report points out.

According to Personnel Today, the company is attempting to motivate its young staff and encourage them to take advantage of the opportunities available to them.

Lorna Bryson, who oversees the A-level and apprenticeship schemes run by the supermarket chain, told the publication that managers need to work to inspire young employees.

Some 20,000 of Tesco's staff are aged between 17 and 24 and new recruits are able to become managers within a year, she explained.

"We have got to teach our managers in how to manage Generation Y, as they are high-maintenance and needy. We need to hand-hold them, as they absolutely want to know where their career is going," she said.

Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen, who sold surplus groceries from his stall in London's east end in 1919.
