V calls for vendetta on undervaluing charity work

National youth charity V is calling on employers looking for to fill vacancies in areas such as media sales jobs to hold volunteering in higher regard.

It describes the practise as one which is an "effective tool for staff development" and essential for those interested in journalism and other media careers.

While the charity describes employers as traditionally treating the route as a "soft option", it also claims certain careers cannot be entered into without it.

Jobs in the creative industries such as journalism as well as medicine, social care and education require hands-on experience but this is often undervalued in candidates going for sales jobs in these areas.

The organisation intends to link graduates who have engaged in these activities with employers and build stronger connections between them for the future.

It describes these prospective links as "partnerships" it seeks to develop.

The group, V, is an independent charity set up to champion youth volunteering and enable "a lasting change in the quality, quantity and diversity" of those who engage in the work.
