Criminal record check requests

Those in office equipment recruitment should not make criminal record checks unnecessarily, an expert says.

Head of public policy at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) Anne Fairweather claims many, including office equipment recruitment staff, are approached with requests to make this kind of information available to potential employers.

She describes the process's effect as putting sales recruitment personnel in a difficult position as employers often say they will not take staff who do not disclose spent convictions but refuse to go through the Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) to obtain this data legally.

The CRB cannot provide this information if the position is not held to require it.

According to Face the Facts on BBC Radio 4, the organisation has received numerous requests for background checks for positions such as train drivers and bricklayers, where it would be breaking the law if it supplied the information.

Ms Fairweather says: "The purpose of a spent conviction is precisely that - it's to help the rehabilitation of offenders and to ensure that something you may have done when you were 16 is not held against you when you're 40."

According to the BBC Radio 4 programme, those looking for jobs in areas such as office equipment recruitment, which does not require contact with vulnerable adults or children, are unlikely to need these checks.
