Business travellers 'downgrade on hotels'
It has been revealed that UK businesses are telling their employees not to use certain types of hotels, which could interest sales professionals who travel as part of their employment.
According to Hilton International, firms are encouraging staff to look for cheaper accommodation when on the road as a result of the global economic downturn.
Speaking at the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) hotels briefing, Chris Silcock, vice president of revenue and service delivery at the company, stated this process of trading down is putting the luxury hotel sector in London under pressure.
He added: "If you look at some business sectors, they are mandating, so they are being told that they can't use certain types of hotels. In terms of budget, they are faring well at the moment."
A UK hotels forecast published by PwC last month indicated occupancy in London could end 2008 1.6 percentage points lower than last year and by the end of 2009 could be more than ten percentage points lower than 2007.
