Clean, simple clothes 'best for job interviews'

Dressing for success in job interviews means scrubbing up and leaving the accessories at home, it has been revealed.

Writing for msnbc.com, reporter Laura Coffey advises that simple, understated styles and colours are often most effective and many hiring managers recommend dressing one or two levels up from the position that is being applied for.

"This isn't the time to go with wild nail polish, jangley jewellery, face jewellery [or] ankle bracelets," she added.

"Have clean, polished shoes in good repair, clean, groomed hair and fingernails, well-brushed teeth, fresh breath and absolutely no body odour."

Ms Coffey went on to say that in the final instance, candidates should allow their own common sense and good judgment to prevail but should ensure that they do not use the occasion to try and make a "flashy fashion statement".

This week, career coach Roger Ingbretsen advised that jobseekers should take time to plan the direction of their future career direction in order to be successful in finding employment.
