Extra qualifications 'should be tailored to posts'

By Paul Goatman

Most employers take little notice of any extra qualifications a candidate may have, unless they are specifically tailored to the position the jobseeker is going for, it has been claimed.

Martin Birchall, managing director at recruitment analyst High Fliers Research, commented that 26 per cent of those graduating this summer expect to continue on at university to do some form of postgraduate course.

"The vast majority of employers don't take any notice of those kinds of additional qualifications unless they're specifically relevant to the role which somebody is applying for," he added.

Mr Birchall went on to say that around half of those who are choosing postgraduate study are doing it for genuine career reasons, whereas others are doing it because they are waiting for the job market to improve or feel under qualified with only a first degree.

The UK Graduate Careers Survey 2009, carried out by High Fliers earlier this week, indicates finalists made applications for accountancy positions in the early months of the graduate recruitment season than any other career area.
