75% of SMEs want more vocational qualifications

Three in four small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) believe there is a mismatch between the skills available in the recruitment market and those they need, a new study reveals.

Research by Edge has found 71 per cent of these firms admit there are not enough applicants with practical skills and vocational qualifications.

Andy Powell, chief executive of Edge, says that employers are aware that this form of learning can prepare young people to take part in business effectively.

He states: "There are many paths to success and helping young people develop work-related skills in school is just one step to ensuring we have the talent the UK needs."
