Top graduates 'lacking interview skills'

By John Oak

The best graduates are failing to make a good impression in job interviews, it has been claimed.

According to recruitment training specialist Evolutions UK, those have been focusing 100 per cent on their studies may have little experience of an interview situation.

David Baker, managing director of the group, commented: "What's important to remember is that an employer is more likely to employ someone with fewer qualifications who is really impressive at interview than a graduate with a first [class degree] who's hopeless when in the hot seat."

He went on to say interviewing requires specialist training and needs to be taught by professionals who have years of experience.

Earlier this week, the Times Colonist reported that candidates who are confident have the best chance of succeeding in an interview.

Reporter Iris Winston commented that answers about candidate competence should be focused on character traits while those about weaknesses should address skills that can be learned.
