Resurgence in DIY market boosts sales jobs

Sales jobs have been bolstered by the news that more people are buying home improvement products as they look to invest in their property rather than move home.

Kingfisher, which owns B&Q, said the sales at its DIY superstore had risen by 1.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2009, compared to a rise of only 0.7 per cent during the same period last year.

ThisIsMoney.co.uk reported: "The retailer put the better-than-expected sales down to demand for gardening products and the collapse of rival MFI."

It added that an increased appetite for DIY as a way to cut costs and add value to a property from homeowners had help bolster figures and create the good news for sales jobs.

Items such as kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms sold particularly well for B&Q.

Sales jobs in the retail sector are defying the recession, according to Richard Dodd, head of media at the British Retail Consortium, who said the market was proving very resilient.
