Sales recruitment: Scrappage scheme could boost retail roles

Extending Comet's home appliance scrappage scheme across the UK could help to improve the nation's energy-efficiency, according to one expert, whose proposals could boost retail sales jobs.

Darren Johnson, Green Party member of the London Assembly, said that the scheme, which has been put in place by the retailer, could be copied throughout Britain.

He said: "It could work in principle in getting people to switch to more energy-efficient appliances ... there is a danger that people just replace one energy-inefficient white good for another equally inefficient [appliance]."

Mr Johnson added that there needs to be more incentives at a national level in order to entice consumers to partake in a scrappage scheme.

In related news, the British Retail Consortium recently called for a domestic appliance scrappage scheme similar to that seen in the car industry, which allowed motorists to trade in their old cars for a significant discount on a new, eco-friendly vehicle.
