High-street retailer Debenhams has posted impressive sales figures for the first half of 2009 and the company hopes the success will continue, which could be good news for retail sales jobs.

The success of schemes such as the Designers at Debenhams clothing range has been highlighted by the company as a key driver in its recent success.

Debenhams chief executive Rob Templeman said: "We believe that the increase in profits in a year which has seen some of the most difficult and volatile trading conditions in recent times is a creditable performance."

Mr Templeman added that it would be hard to predict the habits of consumers during the rest of the year but said the company was optimistic that the upward trend would continue.
