Experts: Sales job guarantees should be given to unemployed

A number of experts have come together to recommend that guarantees should be made to give anyone claiming Job Seekers Allowance for 12 months or longer a job.

The TUC, Work Foundation and former work and pensions secretary James Purnell MP will urge the government to make the move in a bid to avoid rising unemployment for the years following the end of the recession.

A Labour source told the Guardian that the government is considering a scheme similar to the one suggested by the coalition.

"Ministers are looking at exactly this kind of approach. Their first priority is youth employment but they are considering help for the very long-term unemployed," it added.

A letter to current work and pensions secretary of state Yvette Cooper said that a universal job guarantee would help prevent mass unemployment, while experience will also help people achieve future sales recruitment success.

The Times reported that the Conservatives are planning to create a new Work Programme for the jobless.
