Differing age groups 'ensures sales recruitment success'

The key to sales recruitment success is employing a mixture of people of varying ages, according to one specialist.

Rachel Krys, campaign director for the Employers Forum on Age, said that the best workforces are often made up of people representing a very broad age spectrum and noted that this creates a combination of youthful enthusiasm and experience.

Her comments followed the publication of data by the Office for National Statistics, which showed that between March and May 2010 there were 6.6 million people over 50 but below the retirement age employed in the UK - a 0.3 per cent increase on the previous quarter.

Ms Krys explained: "I think the recruitment industry has struggled to realise that a mixed-age team - having people of all different ages - makes a much stronger and much more adaptable team."

She added that people aged in their 50s and 60s are often "very well qualified" and capable of adding another dimension to a team.
