Employee engagement 'must be tackled'

It is essential to tackle employee engagement if companies are to ensure the satisfaction of their staff and boost their loyalty to the company, one sector body has observed.

According to the quarterly Employee Outlook survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), overall, job satisfaction remains low and has decreased by one per cent since the last quarter and substantially since spring 2009.

As with previous quarters, men continue to be less satisfied with their jobs than women, with many considering a switch to a different position or sector.

Mike Petrook, head of public affairs at the CIPD, said the main issue is that people are struggling because they are overworked due to lack of resources.

"To help this employee engagement must be tackled. What we would say is the way to do this is for employers to better communicate. Let people know what is happening - before workers read about in the press," he advised.
